While traveling the 7 Days of Coastal Maine trip itinerary in June 2021, I stayed at Whitehall in Camden, Maine. Below is a quick review of the inn to see if you might be interested in it if you are doing the 7 Days of Coast Maine trip itinerary or just find yourself in Camden, Maine someday.
Whitehall is located on High Street and is about a ten to fifteen-minute walk from downtown. As an initial note, Whitehall is a seasonal inn and only opens from May through October of each year. This coincides with the high season for travel to Maine. However, if you are traveling in the offseason you will need to find alternative accommodations.

Guest Rooms
Whitehall offers a range of guest room options ranging from a Double Bedroom up through King Suites. During my stay at the property, I was booked into a Standard Queen Room. This room is a good size for two people. The Standard Queen Room is often a good value (which follows my normal vacation pattern of saving money on transportation and lodging in order to spend more on food and experiences).
The Queen Room was nicely decorated and clean upon our arrival. The inn is located in an older house, so you will find that the rooms can be smaller and some spaces are tight. Despite the small rooms, we were able to find enough room to open luggage and store items without feeling cramped.
Due to the age of the house, there is no central air in the rooms. Air conditioning is provided by a window unit in each room. This wasn’t an issue to us as it kept the room sufficiently cool and provided some white noise while sleeping.
The bed was comfortable and supporting. Plugs were conveniently available on each side of the bed for device charging.
In a repeat of the small spaces comment from above, the bathroom was quite narrow. While it was functional for one person, it would have been very difficult to have two people getting ready at once in the bathroom. The bathroom also featured a pedestal sink. The sink fits the décor but does make it hard to store any of your toiletries within reach. There were little to no flat surfaces in the bathroom on which to put your bath items (except the floor).
Common Areas
The common areas at Whitehall are where the inn really shines. The inn is fairly large and provides several seating and gathering areas for guests, both inside and outside. The inside gathering areas can accommodate a group for afternoon tea or coffee. There are also more secluded areas that lend themselves to reading or relaxation. There is also a large dining room that is open and mostly unused throughout the day except for breakfast. The many tables make a great place to catch up with your traveling group or play some games in the evening.
In addition to the indoor areas, the outdoor seating provides opportunities to enjoy an evening drink by a fire pit or on a patio with twinkle lights. The porches also feature several rocking chairs that provide a great opportunity to relax and soak up the Maine summer weather.
Breakfast
As with many inns, breakfast for two people is included with your room rate. In my opinion, the breakfast spread was quite nice given some of the COVID restrictions that were still in effect at the time of my visit. While the inn was only providing individually wrapped and packaged breakfast items, it still created a nice breakfast.
During the two mornings that we got breakfast at the inn, similar types of food were served. However, the item flavors rotated and there were small variations of the breakfast food so that it wasn’t identical from one day to the next.
On the first morning, the warm breakfast spread consisted of blueberry cream cheese scones and caprese quiche bites. On the second morning, we were greeted by bacon and cheese scones and spinach quiches.
Honeydew or fruit salad cups, French yogurt/granola, and peanut butter banana overnight oats rounded out the cold breakfast foods. Given the nice presentation and attempt to provide a pleasant breakfast in spite of the COVID restrictions, I would feel confident that they would provide an even better spread when restrictions are lifted.
In addition to the food, orange juice, water, milk, tea, and coffee were all available at breakfast.
While the breakfast spread isn’t going to blow you away, I thought it was very good given the restrictions of the time. The breakfast choices sure beat the breakfast that I got at a Hampton Inn during COVID (granola bar, pop tart, fruit, and bottle of water).
Amenities
Whitehall provides the standard amenities you would expect to make your stay comfortable without being wasteful. I was pleased with the offerings and didn’t feel that anything that I expected was missing during the stay.
Upon arrival you will find a large free parking lot located immediately next to the inn. Parking is also available along the street in front of the inn. Having adequate parking at Whitehall is nice, since packing in downtown Camden, Maine can be a little bit of a pain given the two hour limit that is enforced.
Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the property. Apple TV units are provided in every room and an extensive list of channels are available on the TVs.
Also in each room, Whitehall provides a refrigerator, iron, corkscrew, glasses, morning coffee/tea, hairdryer, and Lather bath amenities. Ice machines are also located at a couple of locations throughout the inn.
In addition to the in-room amenities, Whitehall provides tea, coffee, and cookies for all guests in the afternoon. In addition, during the evening the dining room bar is opened by the hotel staff. They offer a wide selection of beers, ciders, and wine for purchase. A drink on one of the porches or patios can be a nice way to wind down your evening.
Service
Throughout our stay, the service was great. The front desk was almost always staffed. On the off chance that no one was there, Whitehall provided every guest the innkeeper’s cell phone number upon arrival. The front desk staff was also knowledgeable with recommendations for the area. While we already had our daily activities planned, I asked for restaurant recommendations. The Whitehall staff was able to provide great local restaurant recommendations during our stay with them.
Bottom Line
At the end of the day, Whitehall is a great place to stay in Camden, Maine. The building provides a historical charm that is welcome on a scenic trip up the Maine coastline. In addition, the room and amenities are a good value for your stay in Camden. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Whitehall again.
