The Best of Spain in 10 Days – Staying on Points

The Best of Spain in 10 Days itinerary guides you through the varied culture of Spain. This trip starts with historical Spain in Seville and Granada and ends with more modern Spain in Madrid and Barcelona. A significant part of your experience with this itinerary is based on where you stay in each city. Staying in the heart of the city is key to being able to limit your time spent in transit. With less time and money spent traveling, you are able to see more and enjoy richer cultural experiences and dining in the city centers.

The heart of the city is often the oldest and most historical parts as well. Unfortunately, this often means that accommodations in the heart of the city are more expensive. This is where staying on points comes in. This is the practice of booking a hotel using loyalty program points to eliminate the high cost. The following post identifies the best neighborhoods and areas for accommodations for each city of the itinerary. This post also outlines where opportunities to stay on points are available along the journey.

Why a Chain Hotel?

In addition to outlining the optimal neighborhoods, this guide includes the best hotels that are bookable with the most popular points (Hyatt, Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG), and Marriott). Staying on points is a great way to reduce the total cost of our trip. Points can allow anyone to afford good 3 and 4-star accommodations in the city center for free.

I will be the first to admit that many of the major hotel chains don’t provide the same experience in these historic cities as you would get if you were staying in a local B&B or guest house. However, with the proliferation of boutique hotels in these chains and cross-brand partnerships (like Hyatt’s partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World), you can get much closer to the boutique feel while staying on points than you could in years past.

Part of the goal of this website is to show methods of aspirational travel that may not otherwise be possible to you. I encourage the use of points if it allows you to take some of these once-in-a-lifetime vacations. Shown below are some of the best hotels for staying on points located along the itinerary route.

Seville Hotels

The best locations to stay in Seville are the neighborhoods along the riverfront. Attractions in the vicinity are the Alcazar, Plaza de Espana, and the Cathedral de Sevilla. These areas are known as El Arenal, Centro, and Santa Cruz. The Seville map below shows these neighborhoods in blue shading.

While there are many independent and boutique hotels in this area, chain hotels are lacking. If you are looking for hotels that you can book with points, there are only two options in this area:

Mr. and Mrs. Smith – Corral del Ray

Mr. and Mrs. Smith hotels are a boutique hotel brand that partners with the IHG Rewards Club Program. This hotel is located in Centro near the Museo del Baile Flamenco. This is on the northern side of the recommended area but still within easy walking distance to the major attractions. When in these smaller cities, it is often nice to have a boutique hotel feel which the Corral del Ray delivers on.

Hotel Alfonso XIII

Hotel Alfonso XIII is the nicer of the two points hotels in Seville. As part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, you get a taste of staying in a palatial structure. It lets you feel like you live in one of the Alcazars famous in this area of Spain. The hotel is located immediately adjacent to the Jardines de Cristina and the Alcazar de Sevilla, so it also has the best location of the two points hotels.
Hotel Alfonso XIII is a Marriott Category 8 hotel and at the time of writing, most nights are available for 100,000 points per night. While definitely more expensive and less homey than other boutique options would be, this could make a good splurge if you have the points to spare.

Granada Hotels

As with Seville, it is best to be located in the city center to get the full Granada experience. While Granada has more attractions outside the city center than any other stop on this itinerary, it still pays to be in the middle of the city. The city center provides the opportunity to experience many local dining options. The central location also allows guests to experience the walkable historic streets of the city. The three most desirable areas are Catedral de Granada (the area immediately around the Cathedral), Realejo – San Matias, and San Pedro.

Unfortunately for anyone that doesn’t collect Marriott points, the only options for points hotels in Granada are Marriott hotels. Both of the Marriott hotels cost roughly the same in points. The only real differentiators are the location and design of each. If you don’t have Marriott points, this may be an opportunity to redeem other points that reimburse travel purchases. Alternately, use this opportunity to stay in a local boutique or B&B to get a more local experience.

Hospes Palacio de Los Patos

The Hospes Palacio de Los Patos is further from the center of the action than the Hotel Palacio De Santa Paula outlined below. As this hotel is part of the Marriott Design Hotel brand, it sports a more modern and urban aesthetic. The hotel occupies an older building, but the interior mixes many modern furnishing and design elements with the older architecture. While this may appeal to some, I find this somewhat jarring and distracting given the historical environment that Granada has to offer.
Hospes Palacio de Los Patos is a Category 5 Marriott hotel requiring 35,000 points/night. This is not much less than the Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula below. Because of this, I recommend first trying for the Santa Paula and using this as your backup option if you are set on a points hotel in Granada.

Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula

As opposed to the Los Patos above, the Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula captures the historic nature of Granada much better. While this still has the trappings of a traditional American hotel chain (standard beds, desks, TVs, black leather furniture, etc.. ), much of the building architecture has been allowed to remain and shine through in the hotel and guest room design. Santa Paula is located in the heart of Granada approximately three blocks north of the Cathedral meaning that it will be an easy base camp from which to explore all of Granada. Hotel Palacio de Santa Paula is a Category 5 Marriott hotel requiring 40,000 points/night.

Madrid Hotels

As is common with large cities, the chain hotel options available are larger in number. Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, and Marriot all have multiple properties in Madrid. The best neighborhoods for staying in Madrid are:

  • Northern Atocha – This is where you will arrive and depart Madrid by Train
  • Northern Centro – Plaza Mayor and Mercado de San Miguel
  • Cortes and Gran Via – Many of the art museums and famous shopping are in this area
  • El Retiro – Area around the large famous park

Each of these areas has multiple hotel options. Because there are so many options, many hotels are available at lower point prices. These low prices make Madrid a great place to use your points to save money on your trip. This is especially true if you don’t have the points to cover hotels for an entire trip. Also because there are hotel options across every major American hotel chain, you should be able to get a free night no matter what program you collect points in. Centrally located hotel options bookable with points include:

Hyatt Centric Gran Via

Modern Hyatt hotel located at the midpoint of the Gran Via. Located next to large amounts of shopping and restaurants. The hotel is in a great location nearby the Callao and Gran Via subway stops allowing easy transit anywhere in the city further than walking distance away.

Atocha Hotel Madrid

The Atocha Hotel Madrid is located near the Atocha-Renfe Train Station and the Reina Sofia Art Museum. Its location by the Atocha train station makes it very convenient for arrival, departure, and the day trip to Toledo. If you are one to travel with heavier luggage, this is a hotel to check out. Even though the hotel is south of all the most popular attractions, it is still within walking distance of most attractions. Also, the hotel’s proximity to the nearby the Estacion del Arte and Atocha-Renfe subway stops improves accessibility.

DoubleTree Madrid-Prado

This hotel is located very close to the famous Prado art museum in central Madrid (the Cortes neighborhood). This is a prime location for walking to all the best sights in central Madrid. One word of caution is that despite the optimal location, subway stops are not as close to this hotel as many others on the list. For this reason, arrival and departure with luggage will be more difficult. Also if you don’t prefer to do a lot of walking in the city, you should consider another hotel on this list.

Hotel Indigo – Gran Via

Small hotel located off a side street on the Gran Via. Its central location along the Gran Via means it is near lots of shopping and restaurants, but the side street locale means that the hotel avoids some of the noise on this street. The rooms tend to be a little on the smaller side, so it you prefer to operate out of larger rooms, beware. The location next to the Santo Domingo and Callao subway stations means that access to any part of the city is fairly easy.

AC Hotel Atocha

This is the closest hotel to the Atocha train station to make carrying bags to and from transportation a breeze. It is also located near the Atocha-Renfe subway station allowing easy movement through Madrid. The AC Hotel Atocha has a very American business and urban aesthetic. This will be positive to a few but will limit some of the variety and cultural experiences that are part of international travel. Also as this hotel is located further away from sights you will likely find yourself using the subway a little more than from other hotels on this list.

Hotel Palacio del Retiro

This hotel is built in a local palatial home providing much more ambiance than some other standard hotels on this list. It is also located across the street from El Retiro Park providing a fantastic location for walking. Although the hotel is in a prime location for walking, it is located further from subway stations than other hotels on this list. This should only impact you when arriving and departing to the train station as the most popular sights are all within easy walking distance otherwise.

Barcelona Hotels

As with Madrid, Barcelona is a larger city and provides many options when it comes to using points for a hotel stay. The major US chains all have many properties in Barcelona. Barcelona is a large city that has spread widely as it has grown. However, most of the sights are very centrally located. For this reason, the best neighborhoods for accommodations in Barcelona are:

  • Barri Gothic – The old Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. This area is characterized by small winding streets and old buildings and landmarks such as Roman walls.
  • El Born – El Born is known for its narrow medieval streets that have been transformed into modern trendy boutiques and cafes. This area has more nightlife if that is important to you.
  • Eixample – The expansion district of Barcelona between what was the old city and the other surrounding towns. This area has newer construction due to it being built in the 1800s – 1900s.

Similar to Madrid, because there are options in every major American hotel chain, you should be able to get a free night no matter what program you collect points in.

The Wittmore

The Wittmore is an upscale accommodation with an independent hotel vibe. The location in the Gothic district makes it perfect for wandering the historic streets of Barcelona as well as getting to the harbor easily. The rooms are compact but well apportioned. This is an adults-only hotel, so if you are traveling as a family this will not be the stop for you.

Rate/Night: 25,000 pts/night

Claris Hotel & Spa

Claris Hotel is another upscale independent hotel that operates within the Small Luxury Hotels partnership. While located outside of the most desirable Gothic District and El Born, the location at the edge of the Eixample still puts this hotel in a great location for walking to all the sights. The proximity to several metro stations (especially the line that connects to the airport) is a positive given that this is the last stop on the itinerary.

Kimpton Vividora Hotel

The Kimpton Vividora Hotel is located in the Barcelona Gothic district and only a short distance from La Ramla. This location is great for walking and exploring much of the historic culture of Barcelona. The Kimpton is known for its rooftop and poolside bar serving wine and tapas. If you are the adventurous type, this hotel also offers free bikes to rent.

Alexandra Barcelona Hotel

The Alexandra Barcelona Hotel is located in the Eixample area of Barcelona about halfway between Casa Mila and Casa Batllo. This hotel is not located in the historic areas of Barcelona, but that allows for a more modern design aesthetic to show through.

Le Meridien

Le Meridien is located just off La Rambla at the north end of the street. Depending on the location of your room in the hotel you can get a little noise from La Rambla, but the location is superb so overlooking this downside might be the right move. Le Meridien tends to be a nicer brand within the Marriott portfolio so a knowledgeable concierge is often available that can provide recommendations for your stay.

Cotton House Hotel

The Cotton House Hotel has to be one of the nicer chain hotels in the Barcelona area. The hotel is located in a historic building along Gran Via. While this is a central location, it isn’t particularly close to any one sight so public transportation will be a regular need. Despite this downside, the hotel is very chic and trendy. The rooms are well apportioned and the staff takes care of you in the typical Marriott Autograph Collection style.
